There’s something incredibly special about Easter in the countryside. It's not just about spring flowers blooming or the longer, lighter days—it’s about slowing down, spending time with family, honoring traditions, and remembering the true meaning behind this sacred time.
For me, Easter is first and foremost about faith and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It’s a time of reflection, gratitude, and connection—both with God and with my loved ones. We celebrate it the way my family always has: slowly, intentionally, and surrounded by love.
🌿 Holy Week Memories
Growing up Catholic, Holy Week always felt sacred and meaningful. Each day leading up to Easter carries a unique meaning. One of my favorite memories from growing up is picking leaves and flowers with my siblings on Holy Saturday to make our traditional Easter eggs dyed in onion peel. We would press the tiny leaves onto each egg, wrap them in old tights, and then boil them in onion skins. The results were always so beautiful, and I still love that this is a tradition passed down for generations in my countryside.
After mass on Holy Saturday, we bring a basket of food to be blessed by the priest—a simple but meaningful ritual. Inside we pack things like eggs, ham, spring onions, homemade bread, candle, and cake. That blessed food becomes part of our Easter morning breakfast the next day, and there’s something so comforting about knowing that every bite is wrapped in tradition and faith.
🌅 Easter Morning in the Countryside
Easter morning starts with a peaceful breakfast with family, featuring the food we had blessed the day before. It's a quiet, grateful way to begin the day—honoring everything that Easter means to us.
Then we get dressed and head to Easter mass, joining our neighbors in our local countryside church, where the altar is always filled with spring flowers. After mass, we linger to catch up with everyone and soak in the joyful spirit of the day.
🍽️ A Table Full of Traditions
After mass, it’s time for one of the best parts of Easter: family lunch. Each year we gather around the table to share the same comforting homemade dishes:
- Warm homemade soup
- Delicious sarma (stuffed cabbage rolls)
- Soft mlinci
- Boiled potatoes
- Tender roasted lamb
- Creamy French salad
- And of course, crisp green onions for a fresh bite
There’s something for everyone, and the atmosphere is always warm, loud, and full of love.
🐰 Sweet Traditions & Time Together
Another family favorite is the bunny-shaped Easter cake, made from simple ingredients like egg yolks and whites, sugar, flour, butter, and baking powder. It’s always a hit and adds a playful touch to the table.
I also love spending time with my grandpa on Holy Saturday. Each year, I bring him a few cakes and stay to chat for a while. It’s these quiet, tender moments that make Easter in the countryside so special to me.
✝️ A Season of Reflection
Easter is also a time when I find myself reflecting on the suffering Jesus Christ endured for us. That awareness brings a deeper appreciation for everything I have and everyone I get to share this life with. It’s a season of gratitude, peace, and renewed faith.
Whether you're someone who celebrates Easter with a big feast or a quiet moment of prayer, I hope this little peek into my countryside traditions warms your heart. And if you’d like to see what it’s like, you can watch the full video I filmed this Easter on my YouTube channel here.
